Who we are

We are The Jehouligans.

A Belgian family that lives part of the year in Croatia and feels at home pretty quickly anywhere in the world. We travel with a toddler, teens, far too many plans and at least one person who wonders along the way why we did not just book a quiet hotel.

Our story

For us, travelling is never just looking at pretty places. We want to feel how a destination lives, taste local food, be outside and now and then do something we are not entirely sure we can do.

That has taken us from road trips through Africa to frozen Swedish lakes, Moroccan deserts and mountain huts in the Dolomites. Sometimes everything goes perfectly. Sometimes we take a wrong turn, the kids are done with hiking or there turns out to be chicken droppings in the hotel bed. Usually those are exactly the moments that become the best stories later.

On The Jehouligans we do not share perfect holidays, but honest trips the way we really experienced them. With practical information, personal experiences and enough humour to survive the less photogenic moments too.

The storyteller, trip planner and professional overthinker of the family. First gets vertigo, then looks up every possible route and in the end goes anyway.

Keeps the family moving, solves problems and sometimes rightly wonders how he ended up in one of Yentl's plans again.

Aurélie

Our eldest daughter

Creative and increasingly on her own path. She no longer automatically joins every trip, but her view and stories remain part of The Jehouligans.

The adventurer

Adventurous, headstrong and happiest surrounded by horses and other animals. The crazier the adventure, the faster the suitcase is packed. Prefers to stay where others end their journey.

Linus

The youngest Jehouligan

Living proof that adventure does not stop when a toddler comes along. As long as there is enough room for ice cream, playgrounds and strategic breaks.

How we travel

Honest

We tell what was beautiful, but also what disappointed, was too busy or simply not worth the money.

Adventurous, but doable

We love road trips, hiking, camping and unknown places. We are just not top athletes or professional mountaineers, and that is exactly what makes our experiences relatable.

With different ages

What works for a toddler does not automatically work for a teen. We look at travel through different eyes and look for experiences in which everyone finds something of themselves. We love travelling together, but regularly choose individual adventures or trips with part of the family too.

With respect

For local people, cultures, animals and nature. To us a destination is not a backdrop, but a place where others live.

Why this blog?

We do not want to convince families to make exactly the same trips as we do. We want to show how many different ways there are to discover the world together.

Sometimes that is a far-away road trip. Sometimes a weekend on the Dutch coast. And sometimes the biggest adventure is simply discovering that your toddler can walk 35 kilometres, as long as you do not make him walk on asphalt for too long.
